Just a Trim- Kiddie Kutters

If you are like me and a total disaster behind a pair of clippers, you have faced the dreaded hair cut. Lexington has two main haircut places that are geared towards kids. They are Kiddie Kutters in Brannon Crossing and Sharkey's on Nichols Park Drive by the Lowe's.

My son was looking like a member of the Beatles, so I figured it was time for a trim. Is it me, or does it cost a small fortune to get a kid's haircut these days? Of course, you could take them to Great Clips or a barber or hair dresser, but we had a total disaster on our hands the first time we did that (and have photo proof).

He had just turned one and was all about the old guys sitting around and telling stories. The fans were pretty darn cool too until all of a sudden, a scary guy with a weapon came right at him. It was bad. Real bad. But, still kind of funny. So, now we go to places where he can sit in a fun chair and watch a kid's show. We generally go to Kiddie Kutters in Brannon Crossing to get hair cuts. They are located behind Red Robin next to a Crossfit gym and are open every day. For more information about hours, check here. It is $15.95 for a kid's cut and they also have a Kid's First Haircut Package for $18.95 that includes a cut and a certificate for you to keep. But, if you like them on Facebook (see above link), they usually have a sale on Wednesdays where the hair cuts are only $12.00. So, that is usually when we try to go. You just need to mention the deal when you pay. They have some other services too, see below for prices. But, I have only ever seen kid's getting hair cuts. And, once, an adult getting a hair cut. Which was a bit odd if you ask me.

When you get there, you put your name on a list (there is often a short wait) and pick out a movie. They have a pretty decent shelf of DVDs for kids to watch during the hair cut. I am sure you could also bring your own if your kiddo has a specific favorite that would make things go a bit easier. While you wait, they have a large dinosaur slide right in the middle of the room. My son loves playing on this and it usually occupies him until it is his turn.

They also have balloons for each kid that gets a cut, so they can play with theirs while waiting as well. When it is your turn, you can pick out which chair you want to sit it. I know there are two that are more enclosed (the plane and the fire engine), so these are great for younger kids. Less of a chance of them falling out while squirming. They also have a motorcycle, a horse, a Barbie Jeep, and a few more that I am forgetting. Overall, they are in decent shape. We have gotten cuts from both Shannon and Kennisha and they both do a good job. The main point for my kiddo is fast. Does it have to be perfect? Heck no. But, it does have to be fast. They are also very understanding and don't seem to mind that I have to hug him the entire cut or that he won't wear a smock or that we skip the clippers at the end. Which I really appreciate.

They have both an adult sized bathroom and a smaller kid bathroom in the back, which is nice for potty training kids. They also have some hair products and bags for sale around the store.

We did go to Sharkey's once and it is much nicer. It has a hipper feeling and everything is very new. I think it is especially geared towards older kids that enjoy getting pampered. They can either play Xbox or watch television, which was a no-go for us because my son only wanted to watch Peppa (which didn't happen to be on then). They also have newer cars and other fun vehicles to sit in, but they are two seaters, which made it harder to hold onto my kiddo when he decided the haircut was over after one minute. Their haircuts are also a bit more expensive at $18 for a boys cut and $23 for a girls cut. They also did a good job with the haircut, but it was a bigger struggle for us because of the lack of Peppa. I did see that you can now book online for a specific stylist here as well, which is super nice.

Overall, Kiddie Kutters is a bit dated and not necessarily the fanciest place. But, they do a good job and they are pretty good at handling kids that don't like to get a haircut. And, if you have an older kiddo that needs a more careful cut or wants a bit more pampering, Sharkey's may be your style.
