What's Happening this Weekend- April 15th and 16th


I did something a bit different this week, and split up the Easter events around town and the non-Easter events. That way, you can quickly pick and choose based on what you want to do. Lexington and the Bluegrass has a ton of things to do this weekend if you want some Easter events. This list is here. Or, there are a ton of non-Easter events too (see below). Weather looks warm with highs on the high 70s or even low 80s. But, some rain is possible on Sunday.

Saturday, April 15th

Fit4Mom Lexington is having their Three Year Anniversary and Location Launch from 9am to 11am at Pleasant Ridge Park. Come and celebrate with Fit4Mom Lexington! It's our Three Year Anniversary AND our Pleasant Ridge Park location launch! There will be a Stroller Strides class, giveaways, goodie bags, an egg hunt, and kid activities! Kite Fest at Jacobson Park from 12pm to 4pm. Look up in the skies of Jacobson Park to see hundreds of kites this spring! Join Lexington Parks & Recreation as we celebrate National Kite Month. Kite Fest is our first major outdoor event of the season. Free activities include kite flying, inflatables, special entertainment, kite making and more! Food vendors will be on site throughout the day or families may pack a lunch and picnic in the park. More information here.

Lexington Family Magazine is having their 2017 Summer Camps and Activities Fair from 10am to 2pm. Join us for our 15th year of FREE Family Fun!At the Summer Camps & Activities Fair, visit booths representing camps, afterschool activities, birthday party venues, health care professionals, schools and more. The Fair will be held at Lexington Christian Academy at 450 W. Reynolds Rd. just across the street from Meijer and behind Fayette Mall. You'll find giant inflatables, face painting, games and giveaways. This year we also will have local food trucks selling ice cream, hot dogs, BBQ and more!While you are there you can enter your kids in our Cover Model Contest. Professional photographer SVM Portraits, will take photos of all their smiling faces and we'll use those pictures to choose winners who will appear on the covers of Lexington Family Magazine in the next year.We'll also have performances all day long from some of the most talented kids in the bluegrass including dancers, martial artists, gymnasts and more. Lexington Opera House is showing Cinderella at 2pm and 7:30pm. The Lexington Ballet brings the timeless tale of Cinderella to life in a production that will delight the entire family. Cinderella follows the rags-to-riches story of a young girl who is mistreated by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. With the magical assistance of a fairy godmother, Cinderella attends a royal ball thrown by the handsome prince. Complete with lavish sets, sumptuous costumes and set to Sergei Prokofiev's glorious score, The Lexington Ballet performs this beautiful two act masterpiece under the artistic direction of Luis Dominguez. Beaumont Branch of the library is having a Mathnasium event from 2pm to 4pm. Think math is boring? Think again! Drop in and explore the fun side of math through a variety of hands-on activities. Presented by Mathnasium. Grades K-5. Event is free and open to the public. More information here.

Tates Creek library is having a Magic School Bus Explores Dinosaurs event from 2pm to 3pm. Go back in time with hands-on activities. Ages 5-9. Registration required. To register and more information here.

Wild Figs Books and Coffee is having Drag Queen Story Hour from 2pm to 3pm. You asked for it, so we're doing it again! In order to inspire safe spaces for inclusive dialogue and promote childhood literacy, Sunflower Kids and Wild Fig Books & Coffee are teaming up with Lexington performer, Uma Jewels to share some incredible children's books and conversation about diversity and self-love. The Family Center in Wilmore is having a Mini Music class from 5pm to 5:30pm. Mini Music (Infant-2 years)This group is geared towards caregiver and baby (moms, dads, grandparents, nanny, etc) Come for a unique bounding experience with your child while you both discover the fun of music!THIS WILL BE A MONTHLY GROUP! $10 per family. The Family Center in Wilmore is having a Signing Stars Music Class from 5:45pm to 6:15pm. Singing Stars (3-8yrs)School age kids will have a blast exploring music through sounds, dances, instruments, books and their own voices! Music Therapy groups are unique in that we work on non-musical skills as well as musical ones. Come and watch your child grow their spacial reasoning, social skills, sustained attention, school skills and much more while they develop musically. The Family Center in Wilmore is having a Spectrum Musicians class from 6:30pm to 7pm. Spectrum Musicians (5-18) This group is developed to meet the unique needs of peoples with disabilities, geared specifically towards Autism Spectrum Disorder, but all are welcome. In this group we will address common goals and skill development while adapting activities to meet the needs of everyone involved, encouraging socialization, connection, and just overall fun! Barnes and Noble is having a Too Many Carrots Storytime at 11am. When Rabbit collects too many carrots, which leave him unable to sleep in his cozy burrow, other animals offer to share their homes. Joseph Beth is having a Percussion Petting Zoo event at 11am. I just want to bang on my drum all day! Join us in welcoming The Lexington Christian Academy's Percussion Ensemble for stories, a performance and a chance for YOU to play on a variety of different instruments! Joseph Beth is having a Kid's Open Mic with John Crissman event at 2pm. Get your silly costumes, magic tricks and best jokes ready for this spectacular monthly event! Kids tell the jokes to a live bookstore audience in a fun and friendly environment. More information here.

Keeneland is having a Sunrise Trackside event from 7am to 8:30am. Join us every Saturday morning during the race meeting for Sunrise Trackside. Enjoy Breakfast with the Works, watch the horses train on the track and enjoy free children’s activities in the Kids Club Corner like face painting, photos in jockey silks and meet Buckles the Kids Club mascot. After breakfast, learn more about the horse industry during our fun and educational paddock demonstration. Breakfast: Equestrian Dining Room from 7-8:30 a.m. $7 for breakfast buffet. Lexington Children's Theatre is performing Diary of a Worm, Spider, and and a Fly at 2pm and 7pm. It’s a bug’s life – and in this case, a bug’s musical! Based on the wildly popular book series, by Doreen Cronin, we’ll explore what it means to be a bug – it might not bee all that different from beeing you! For ages 4+. $15 children, $18 adults.
